Unwanted Prescription Drug Disposal Event – October 27

The Avondale Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are having an Unwanted Prescription Drug Disposal event on Saturday, October 27, from 10am to 2pm at the CVS Pharmacy at 280 N Avondale Blvd in Avondale.

Note: Even though this is a one-day special event, there are several pharmacies in Avondale and surrounding areas with unwanted/outdated prescription drop offs available every day.  Be safe, get rid of what you don’t need… find one and drop them off!

The Avondale Public Works Water Conservation Coordinator provided an announcement on NextDoor.  According to their post:

The Avondale Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are offering people the opportunity to drop off expired or unwanted prescription drugs in Avondale, as part of a national initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of prescription-drug abuse and how to dispose of the drugs properly.

The event on Saturday, October 27 will provide people a place to dispose of medication safely. Police and the DEA will hand out information on the dangers of prescription drugs and how to dispose of the drugs properly. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

All pills, capsules, tablets will be accepted, excluding glass containers. Liquid medications, inhalers, syringes or other items used to inject medication will not be accepted under current DEA guidelines. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.

Town Hall Summary: Parking

On Saturday February 24, 2018, the Board of Rio Crossing Homeowners Association held a meeting to hear homeowner input on parking issues in the community.

The Board of Directors was represented by Julia, Matt, and Ray.  Homeowners were present from seven Lots.

Julia began the meeting with a discussion about current parking rules from the Association, City of Avondale, and the state of Arizona.  Afterward, she canvassed the non-Board attendees for their input and concerns.  Her notes included the following comments:

1.      Trailer parking in the garage allowing trailer to take the space of a vehicle

2.      Street parking available to homeowners/residents

3.      Cars driving too fast

4.      Cars taking too wide of turn

5.      Homeowner/renter business creating additional parking issues

6.      Limit cars to not park on both sides of the street

7.      Unsafe for children to cross the street

8.      Cars parking in gravel and on landscaping

9.      Abandoned vehicles

10.    Utility vehicles parking on street

11.    Parking too close to intersection corners and fire hydrants

12.    Difficult to see when pulling out of some cul-de-sacs

13.    Parked cars causing issues with trash pickup and bulk trash

14.    Loitering by parked cars

The Board will continue to discuss parking concerns and assess ways the association can assist in addressing those concerns.  Homeowners can address most parking issues directly by calling the Avondale Police Department’s Non-Emergency line at (623) 333-7001.

Money-Saving Irrigation Shutdown

You may notice that nothing is being watered in the Rio Crossing common areas, and we thought you might want to know what’s going on.

The water to the grass has been off for several weeks, as the winter grass never came back up.  A decision was made not to over-seed the summer-Bermuda grass with winter-Rye grass, so watering the dormant Bermuda isn’t necessary.

We had been continuing to water shrubs and trees into the cold season, but there have been a large number of leaks in the irrigation system, and our water bills were extremely high for a few months, especially after the storm damage that occurred in July.  As of the end of October, our landscape vendor had removed all the dead trees and repaired irrigation system damage from the storm, but we know some additional irrigation problems remain.

At the January 2018 board meeting, a decision was made to shut off all of the irrigation system (except for the flowers at the entrance monuments) for a few weeks while we get proposals from irrigation/landscape vendors to do a “water audit” – helping us to determine what our water bills should be, given the number of trees and shrubs, and amount of grass area.  Since it’s still technically “winter season”, the shrubs and trees don’t require constant watering, and the amount of money saved on wasted water (the stuff that flows down the gutters or just makes puddles in the sand where there are no plants) will help pay for the water audit.

The plan was to turn the water on after a few weeks, but we got some rain earlier this week (about a third of an inch), so we’ll leave the water off for the moment.  The Board and Landscape Committee will continue to evaluate the irrigation needs and make adjustments as needed.  In the meantime, we’re saving around a thousand dollars a week in water costs.

7 Trees Removed

Here is a map of the 7 trees that were removed recently that were sick, leaning, or diseased according to our landscape company.  (Red marks indicate removed tree).
